Charles R. Brizzi

Charles Robert Brizzi, of Fulton, died May 14, 2007, of heart failure, at Sinai Hospital, in Baltimore. He was 60.

Born Feb. 16, 1947, in Tampa, Fla., to Benjamin and Edith Brizzi, he graduated from High Point High School, in Beltsville, in 1965.

After high school, he attended electrical apprenticeship classes in Washington, D.C., through Local No. 26 Electrical Union, based in Atlanta, Md., where he became a licensed master electrician.

He married Carol Brown in 1998.

Mr. Brizzi was the owner, since 1985, of Brizzi's Billiard Supply, in Laurel. Previously, he owned two other businesses, Beltsville Pool Hall, which was in business from 1980 to 1984, and the Corner Cue, a billiards hall located in Laurel, which was in business from 1985 to 1994.

He was a member of the Rolls Royce Club, in Fulton, for the last four years. According to family members, he collected classic and hot-rod cars. He also loved Harley-Davidson motorcycles.

Mr. Brizzi was a member of the Local No. 26 Electrical Union, located in Atlanta, Md., for 25 years.

Mr. Brizzi is survived by his wife of nine years, Carol A. Brizzi, of Fulton; two daughters, Dena Owens, of Mechanicsville, and Denise Rogers, of Columbia; four sons, Bradley Brizzi, of Mechanicsville, Christopher Rogers, of Burtonsville, Ronald Rogers, of Crofton, and Michael Rogers, of Annapolis; five sisters, Janet McCollum, of Huntingtown, Bonnie King, of Jefferson, Penny Noske, of Greenbelt, Anita Miller, of Mitchellville, and Tina Farnandez, of Huntingtown; and three grandchildren, A.T. Logan, of Mechanicsville, Alyssa Dorsey, of Columbia, and Preston Rogers, of Bethesda.

Funeral services were held May 23, 2007, at Donaldson Funeral Home in Laurel. The Rev. Dennis Whitmore presided.

Interment was private.

James F. Givens Jr.

James Franklin Givens Jr., of Ellicott City, died May 10, 2007, of cancer, at his residence. He was 78.

Born Feb. 13, 1929, in Laytonsville, to James Franklin Sr. and Eva Seal Givens, he attended Lisbon High School.

He married Lois E. Good in 1948.

Mr. Givens was a machinist in aluminum manufacturing for Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corporation, in Baltimore, for 31 years.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Lois E. Givens, of Ellicott City; a daughter, Sharon Y. Clay, of King George, Va.; two sisters, Ruth Cooper, of Sykesville, and Mary "Sis" Howes, of Hagerstown; two brothers, Johnny Givens and Ray Givens, both of West Virginia; two grandchildren, Duane Clay, of Spotsylvania, Pa., and Jody Funk, of Gladys, Va.; and four great-grandchildren, Danielle Clay, of Fredericksburg, Va., Shannon Funk, of Gladys, Alex Funk, of Gladys, and Samuel Funk, of Gladys.

Funeral services were held May 14, 2007, at Slack Funeral Home in Ellicott City. The Rev. Kipp Smith officiated.

Interment was private.

Hazel V. Merta

Hazel Vern Merta, of Columbia, died May 13, 2007, at Angels Alert Assisted Living, in Elkridge. She was 87.

Born Nov. 11, 1919, in Evansville, Ind., to Heber and Lillie Frances Sumners Jeffers, she graduated from Central High School, in Evansville, in 1938.

She married Philip Merta in 1956.

Mrs. Merta was a homemaker. According to family members, she was known as a top-notch baker, especially when it came to her pies, which she used to bring to her daughter, Melissa Ann Leffler, at work.

She was predeceased by her husband of 47 years, Philip Merta; and a sister, Earlene Russell.

Mrs. Merta is survived by a son, Philip Jeffrey Merta, of Columbia; five daughters, Jacquelyn K. Nedrow, of Murfreesboro, Tenn., Rebecca Lynn Shade, of Fairfax, Va., Melissa Ann Leffler, of Ellicott City, Deborah Sue Wardingley, of Casselberry, Fla., and Kimberly Irene Buschman, of Key West, Fla.; a niece, Robin Dillman, of Mount Vernon, Ind.; a nephew, Rick Russell, of Dallas; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held May 22, 2007, at Columbia Baptist Fellowship, in Columbia.

Interment was private.

Charles E. Baker

Charles Edward Baker, of Ellicott City, died May 23, 2007, of heart failure, at Johns Hopkins Hospital, in Baltimore. He was 78.

Born Aug. 8, 1928, in Baltimore, to Samuel and Alice Kahler Baker, he graduated from Polytechnic High School, now called Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, in Baltimore, in 1946.

He married Evelyn Curry in 1948.

He graduated from Johns Hopkins University in 1955 with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering.

Mr. Baker worked for 40 years as an electrical engineer with Westinghouse, working in several locations throughout the Baltimore area. He retired in 1997.

He was a member of First Evangelical Church, in Ellicott City, for 46 years.

According to family members, Mr. Baker enjoyed fishing, woodworking and traveling.

He was predeceased by a sister, Betty Baker Mae.

Mr. Baker is survived by his wife of 59 years, Evelyn Baker, of Ellicott City; two daughters and two sons-in-law, Melanie and Robert Faringer, of Leesburg, Va., and Nancy and Vince Pugliese, of Ontario, Canada; a son, Chip Baker, of San Antonio; a sister, Charlotte McAfee, of Baltimore; several nephews and nieces, including those from the McAfee and McCadden families; six grandchildren, Michael Farringer, of Leesburg, Ashley Baker, of San Antonio, Andrew Baker, of San Antonio, Amanda Pugliese, of Ontario, Andrea Pugliese, of Ontario, and Alyssa Pugliese, of Ontario.

A memorial service was held May 26, 2007, at First Evangelical Lutheran Church, in Ellicott City. The Rev. Glenn E. Ludwig presided.

Interment will be held at a later date.

Chizoba M. Nwagbara

Dr. Chizoba Mmaezi Nwagbara, of Columbia, died May 22, 2007, at Howard County General Hospital. She was 43.

Born Feb. 14, 1964, in Nigeria, to Samuel Nwagbara-Chuku and Salome Nwagbara, she graduated from high school in Nigeria in 1981.

In 1990, she graduated from the University of Port Harcourt in Nigeria, completing her doctor of medicine degree with public health as her specialty.

In 1996, Dr. Nwagbara obtained a master's degree in public health from Johns Hopkins University.

For the last six years, Dr. Nwagbara worked as a public health specialist for Prince George's County Public Health Department, in Cheverly. At the time of her death, she was a supervisor in epidemiology.

Dr. Nwagbara is survived by her parents, Samuel Nwagbara-Chuku, of Nigeria, and Salome Nwagbara, of Columbia; three daughters, Sapphire Ukairo, Chizoba Ukairo and Ukwuoma Ukairo, all of Columbia; three brothers, Kelechi Nwagbara, Kinika Nwagbara and Chimela Nwagbara, all of Nigeria; a sister, Ihuoma Nwagbara, of Nigeria; an uncle, Clement Nwoha, of Nigeria; two aunts, Beatrice Onwuchekwa, of England, and Ada Igwe-Nwarusi, of Nigeria; five cousins, Obijuru Nwagbara, of Nigeria, Dr. Ogonda Bennett, of England, Charity Igwe, of Dallas, Okachi Omah, of Dallas, and Comfort Emerjury, of Atlanta; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be June 7, 2007, 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m., at Witzke Funeral Home, 5555 Twin Knolls Road, Columbia.

Funeral services will be held June 8, 2007, 11 a.m. at Witzke.

Interment will follow at Good Shepherd Cemetery, 2805 Rogers Ave., Ellicott City.
