Howard County represented in IWLCA All-America honors

The women’s college lacrosse season ended Sunday with the University of Maryland relinquishing its national title to Northwestern University. The game was a rematch of last year’s final in which Maryland upset Northwestern.

This year it was the other way, with Northwestern winning, 8-7.

Howard County was well represented on Maryland’s team. Coach Cathy (Nelson) Reese is an Ellicott City resident and graduate of Mt. Hebron.

Freshman Beth Glaros scored four of Maryland’s five first-half goals in the championship game. Those who watched her play four years at Wilde Lake often wondered how she would fare on a larger stage. Quite well, it appears.

Junior Kristy Black (Glenelg) had a goal and two assists. Black, like Glaros and Reese, are former Howard County Players of the Year in girls lacrosse.

Abbey Clipp, a freshman goalkeeper from Marriotts Ridge,  and Sara Cooper, a senior defender from Centennial, are also on Maryland’s team.

The postseason honors are starting to be announced. Mt. Hebron graduate Jackie Doherty, a senior at the University of Notre Dame, made the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association All-America first team as a defender.

Alayna Markwordt (Glenelg), a junior at Ohio State, was named to the IWLCA second team at attack, and University of Florida sophomore Ashley Bruns (Mt. Hebron) was picked at attack for the third team. Bruns is also a former high school player of the year.

UMBC junior Alicia Krause (Mt. Hebron) was named to the IWLCA Mid-Atlantic All-Region second team.

An America East All-Conference first team selection, Krause led the Retrievers in ground balls (29), draw control (32) and caused turnoves (20).  She ranked second on the team with 35 goals, 15 assists and 50  points.

She was among the league’s top 10 in scoring, and had six hat tricks this season.

UMBC freshman midfielder Kristen Bilney (Mt. Hebron) was a unanimous selection to the America East all-rookie team.

Gettysburg University’s Hannah Church (Mt. de Sales) was named to the IWLCA Division III second team. She finished third in the nation and school history with 86 goals, and she led the Bullets with 99 points this year.

Church, a first-team all-conference and all-region selection, was at her best in the NCAA tournament, as she set national records with 26 goals and 29 points en route to being named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. The junior attack had five goals and three assists in the national title game as Gettysburg defeated Bowdoin, 16-5.

Defender Lindsay Menton (Glenelg Country School) was also a member of the Division III national championship team.
